Your Council Member Since 2006

I am grateful and humbled to be able to represent the residents, families, and business people of the Village of Palmetto Bay. Long before taking office, my family called this wonderful area our home. Since moving to South Dade in 1972 and my current home in 1977,  I have operated a successful business in the Village, my children have attended our local schools, and we have thoroughly benefited from all the facilities and green spaces the "Village of Parks" has to offer. Palmetto Bay is a leading community of South Florida on many levels including quality of life, schools, and economic opportunity. I cannot imagine a better place to live, work, and play. That is why I am so proud to serve you on the Village Council, whereby ensuring that together, we can maintain and protect the best qualities of our community.

I hope you find this website useful and enlightening. As always, if you  wish to discuss an issues facing your neighborhood, the Village, or government operation, please feel free to contact me directly. I look forward to serving you well into the future. Thank you.

Speaking of the Council's term ending the campaign process is ongoing.  Campaign signs are going up but are disappearing.  It's a difficult call to start putting up signs or not when the campaign starts too early.  However, campaign signs are part of the election process.  We need to respect that.  It is important that signs are left in place.  One candidate has filed a Police Report about the missing signs and there was an arrest made regarding the theft of another candidate's signs. Signs are part of the democratic election process.  Please leave them in place and don't take them to avoid a police issue.

The ground breaking for the new and improved Old Cutler Bike Path was hosted by County Commissioner Katy Sorenson.  My committee, the Old Cutler Bike Path Committee issued a detailed report regarding the necessity of upgrading the path to make it safe.    Look for the on-going construction and finally the improvements as the work is beginning.

Speaking of more work on Old Cutler Rd.  For a few days in August Old Cutler was closed for the beginning of the re-hydration project at the Deering Estate.  This is part of the larger project to restore the wetlands.  Read about this important and huge project that Palmetto Bay has a small part in.

Check out the progress on Village Hall.  The Blue Dome is now in place as well as the clock in the clock tower.  Our New Village Hall is a project that has come together in such a positive way.  We have received $1.2 million dollars in grants towards the cost of Village Hall (over $19 million in grants to the Village to date) from LEED certification and Emergency Management funding sources.  This is fully the result of our grant writer, Olga Cadaval, her ability to sniff out the money and the quality of her grant writing.  Grant writing is a skill requiring knowledge of the Village, the programs available and the ability to match the municipality with the grant focus and requirements.  As you probably know, grants are graded and awarded based on the quality of the grant program submitted, the Village's history and experience in managing them, and the match to the grant agency.  Outside lobbying does not come into play.   http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4910333&id=80499470744

Shed Amnesty Relief Program Ends August 3 - This program has been in effect for almost 18 months.  The purpose of this program is to help residents get permits for their sheds that were not originally built or installed with one.  If you inherited a shed by home purchase, bought one and the company was supposed to pull the permit, got one after Andrew, or for any other reason you may not have a 'legal' shed.  This ordinance set to expire Aug. 3 makes it cheaper (no fines) and easier (rules are relaxed on setbacks, etc) to get the required permit.  Your shed will be found if you sell your house, pull a permit for something else, your neighbor pulls a permit and has an inspection, or someone in your neighborhood files a code complaint (not necessarily about you).  It was not allowable by the Village to "Grandfather" sheds that were in existence.  The Amnesty was the only way to avoid large numbers of residents receiving tickets and fines over time. The issue was brought to me by a resident who was ticketed and a group of his neighbors who received tickets the same day.  Call Village Hall, 305-259-1234 ask for Zoning and get the information and find out if you have a permit.  Once the Amnesty expires the variance will no longer be available.  http://www.palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Building-Permits/Shed%20Program.pdf

Old Cutler Road Detour begins on Monday, July 26, 2010 and will last approximately 2 weeks.   The reason for the detour is the beginning of construction of the Deering Estate Flow-Way project.  This project is part of the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands Project headed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and involves the installation of a pipe five feet in diameter, which will run under Old Cutler Road.  The Deering Estate Flow-way project is part of the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands Project.  The project is headed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and involves the installation of a pipe five feet in diameter, which will run under Old Cutler Road. This re-hydration project will bring water back to the Deering Estate and the historic Cutler Creek within the Estate and create healthier wetlands.  This is part of the overall Biscayne Bay and Coastal Wetlands restoration plan.  Follow the links for more details on the project and details on following or avoiding the detours. http://www.deeringestate.org/pages/Deering-Estate-Flow-way-Component.aspx

Safe Route to Schools
The Village is receiving County grant money to survey safer routes to schools for our kids – a program that is close to my heart as a long-time advocate for schools and safer streets in our community.
This study is part of a national program that encourages kids to walk and bicycle to school. The areas around and leading up the Village's four public schools will benefit.
This is also good green news, as it encourages kids to reduce their carbon footprint on our community, and it's great news for the health of our kids, too. In fact, I was quoted recently in The Miami Herald saying just that!

 Village Map May Spark Growth
I have been a strong advocate of economic growth in the Village's commerical areas. There is a recent effort underway that will kick start interest and growth of new and existing businesses in our community – the new Village of Palmetto Bay map. The premier edition of this new marketing tool is presently in production, as advertisers are now lining up for the 30 display-ad slots available. More than 75,000 maps will be produced annually. Visit the Village website and/or Miami Maps for more information.

   Speaking of Economic Development...
The Miami Herald (part 1) and Palmetto Bay News (part 2) recently featured a series I wrote outlining all the current commercial developments taking place across the Village. Click the links above to read more...

rad/KIDS Self-Defense for Kids

Village Police continue their popular rad/KIDS training with a two groups of students from Coral Reef Elementary School this week. Last month, the Village received extensive news coverage of the self-defense training for kids on Channel 4, in the Palmetto Bay News, and on Channel 6.
