Hurricane Season is certainly upon us.  T.S. Bonnie gave us a little heads up on what to prepare for.  The Village has prepared Emergency information to help us prepare.  Our Public Works Department also has an information brochure on Hurricane Readiness    Tips on safety, clean-up and making the storm a little more comfortable are always welcome.

Council Updates from June 28, 2010 Cont'd:

Please make water safety part of your summer plans.

Summer has arrived with all of the great family fun associated with pools and the beach.  Every year children and adult family members suffer injuries or drown in waterelated activities.  Swimming lessons are of paramount importance for children who live in South Florida.  Miami Dade County has resources for swimming lessons http://www.miamidade.gov/parks/fun-pool_swim-lessons.asp as well as the YMCAhttp://www.southflorida.com/sfparenting/sfe-sfp-southmiami,0,4679801.story.

CPR for Friends & Family  is being offered by the VillageBe prepared in case of an emergency.  The programis being held on  July 7, 10-noon,  at the Edward & Arlene Feller Community Room.  The Class is provided by a certified CPR instructor, through Baptist Health South Florida.  Register with Baptist via e-mail.

Miami Metro Zoo celebrates its 30th birthday with great discounts on admission and more.  Check it out for summer vacation fun.   http://www.miamimetrozoo.com/articles.asp?Id=511&categoryId=1

Palmetto Bay Summer Camps are still registering.  Join the fun at Coral Reef and Palmetto Bay Parks.  Take a look before it's too late and all the spaces are filled.  http://palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Village%20Departments/Parks%20-%20Rec/SummerCamp/SummerCampCalendar-10.pdf

The 4th of July is just around the Corner.  The Mangowood traditional Flag Raising Ceremony is Sunday morning at 10:30 - 11:30 AM at the entrance.  The Flyover of the F-16's from Homestead Air Force Base is planned during the flag ceremony and is really inspirational.

The 4th  of July Fireworks at Blackpoint Marina start as dusk approaches.  Be part of South-Dade's biggest 4th of July party, at Black Point Park. So come on down -- and get fired up to enjoy our County's Birthday Partyhttp://www.palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Events/July%204th/Blk%20Pt%204July%202010%20Flyersm%20Final%206-16-10.pdf

Reminder:  Shed Amnesty Relief expires in August.  Sheds have been on a lot of minds lately.  Get your shed legal.  Several people have come to me lately, because their sheds were found not to be in compliance when they pulled a permit for other work on their homes, i.e., driveways, roofs, fences, doors, etc.  This is the opportunity to come into compliance without a lot of hassle and expense.  Please take this opportunity.  http://www.palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Building-Permits/Shed%20Program.pdf

Deering Point held its grand opening this weekDeering Point is the Miami Dade County Park on the C-100 canal (Snowden's for those in the know) that has been under re-construction.  The completed Park allows for better access to the water for canoes and kayaks, great parking and a beautiful view.  It is immediately adjacent to Palmetto Bay's Thallatta Park and provides convenient parking to visit there as well. Go to the Facebook photo album for a quick tour of the park.  By the way, to view Palmetto Bay's photos on Facebook you don't have to be a member but it is a quick load way of viewing  pictures instead of on our website.  Just trying to make it easier to see our photos especially for those of you on dial-up.  http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=181866&id=80499470744

Yes, it is campaign season and I am running for Mayor.  Yes, it did start early this time around.  There are no rules as of yet on when campaigns or signs can start.  I do sympathize with the residents who have contacted me about the length of this campaign season and the yard signs.  I did try to hold off as long as my committee would let me.  However, it is all part of the democratic process that is so important to all of us.  The process is what allowed us to elect to incorporate.  Signs are a way of showing support.  My signs are going up but only after a resident has been contacted and given permission for the sign placement.  They are being placed by my sign committee in accordance with the rules established by the Village.  When we place a sign we also leave information on the sign rules and contact information if the sign needs service from damage or loss. There has been talk about missing and misplaced signs.  I expect that most of the sign loss is from kids fooling around (please discourage this) or yard services.  I am attaching the Palmetto Bay Election Official's information letter on campaigns.  I know that everyone understands that the signs are just part of the election process that must be respected.  http://palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Village%20Departments/Clerk/SIGNS-long-2.pdf

There has been much talk and conversation about the oil spill and what the impacts will be on Florida and the South Dade area.  I am providing two links to keep the information flowing.  Miami Dade County Mayor Alvarez's Office provides these updates.  http://palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/County-State%20Departments/Mayors%20Office/Deepwater%20Horizon%20Oil%20Spill.pdfThe Public Service Commission provides this link to its update newsletter on this and other issues such as the FPL lines site planshttp://www.floridapsc.com/.

COUNCIL UPDATE, Jan. 13, 2010 -- I hope the New Year has started out in a positive direction for everyone. I love the feel of a clean slate and starting fresh in January of each year. New goals to accomplish and directions to take make the New Year an exciting time for me. True, some of the resolutions may get held over from the past year but there is new hope to be able to check the box, completed. The Palmetto Bay website has a quick glance view in pictures of the past year in our Village. Take a look and then tour the rest of the website. It keeps changing and continues to offer more and more to our residents.
