Shed Relief Amnesty Expires Aug 3
This ordinance allows residents to bring unpermitted sheds into compliance without double permit fees or code violation fines. A permit under the amnesty will cost $85 as well as greatly reduced fees and paperwork if a variance is required.    Without the Amnesty Program costs could be $2000.  It is much cheaper and paperwork is easier NOW. You  may have an unpermitted shed if:
1.  you bought a house with a shed
2.  Post Andrew Shed
3.  Thought the company pulled the permit.
You will have to permit your shed if:
>You sell your house
>Pull a permit for a roof, driveway, fence, remodeling, etc.
>Get caught if your neighbor pulls a permit.
Call Zoning to find out if  your shed was permitted.
After the deadline the variance will no longer be available.   Visit Village Hall,  or call the Zoning Department at 305-259-1234,
Or go to:  Shed Amnesty

My Council Updates, June 2010

It has come to my attention that at the July 14, 2010 School Board Meeting there will be standardized contract regarding Charter Schools up for approval.  This contract will be considered a boilerplate contract to be used on all future charter school approvals.  The contract is currently set to be on the Consent Agenda.  This means that a vote without discussion will put this boilerplate contract in place basically forever.  We all have come to realize that Charter Schools are the wave of the future in our communities.  It is very important that the contract approving their placement in our communities protects and provides for our children and manages the schools in a manner that we would expect from our public schools operated through Miami Dade County Schools.  I fear that this contract has not been vetted in a manner that will keep our children safe, provide necessary oversight on the management of our Charter Schools and require the fiduciary responsibility necessary to manage our tax money.  Included is a link to the contract, contact information for the School Board Members and information on the School Board Meetings. I need your help. I am asking for your help in contacting all the School Board Members (Lawrence Feldman represents our district) and request in writing or phone call the withdrawal of the item from the consent agenda.  I am also asking for your help by attending the Meeting on the 14th of July to request that the item not be passed and be deferred to the future. Numbers are impressive.  I will be attending the meeting to voice my concerns and request the deferral.  Please plan on attending.  It will take numbers to convince the Board Members to defer the contract.  Call me for additional information if you wish.

Please make water safety part of your summer plans.
Summer has arrived with all of the great family fun associated with pools and the beach.  Every year children and adult family members suffer injuries or drown in water related activities.  Swimming lessons are of paramount importance for children who live in South Florida.  Miami Dade County has resources for swimming lessons http://www.miamidade.gov/parks/fun-pool_swim-lessons.asp as well as the YMCA http://www.southflorida.com/sfparenting/sfe-sfp-southmiami,0,4679801.story.

CPR for Friends & Family  is being offered by the VillageBe prepared in case of an emergency.  The programis being held on  July 7, 10-noon,  at the Edward & Arlene Feller Community Room.  The Class is provided by a certified CPR instructor, through Baptist Health South Florida.  Register with Baptist via e-mail.
Miami Metro Zoo celebrates its 30th birthday with great
discounts on admission and more.  Check it out for summer vacation fun.

Palmetto Bay Summer Camps are still registering.  Join the fun at Coral Reef and Palmetto Bay Parks.  Take a look before it's too late and all the spaces are filled.  http://palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Village%20Departments/Parks%20-%20Rec/SummerCamp/SummerCampCalendar-10.pdf

The 4th of July is just around the Corner.  The Mangowood traditional Flag Raising Ceremony is Sunday morning at 10:30 - 11:30 AM at the entrance.  The Flyover of the F-16's from Homestead Air Force Base is planned during the flag ceremony and is really inspirational.

The 4th  of July Fireworks at Blackpoint Marina start as dusk approaches.  Be part of South-Dade's biggest 4th of July party, at Black Point Park. So come on down -- and get fired up to enjoy our County's Birthday Party.  http://www.palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Events/July%204th/Blk%20Pt%204July%202010%20Flyersm%20Final%206-16-10.pdf

Reminder:  Shed Amnesty expires in August.  Sheds have been on a lot of minds lately.  Get your shed legal.  Several people have come to me lately, because their sheds were found not to be in compliance when they pulled a permit for other work on their homes, i.e., driveways, roofs, fences, doors, etc.  This is the opportunity to come into compliance without a lot of hassle and expense.  Please take this opportunity.  http://www.palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Building-Permits/Shed%20Program.pdf

Deering Point held its grand opening this week.  Deering Point is the Miami Dade County Park on the C-100 canal (Snowden's for those in the know) that has been under re-construction.  The completed Park allows for better access to the water for canoes and kayaks, great parking and a beautiful view.  It is immediately adjacent to Palmetto Bay's Thallatta Park and provides convenient parking to visit there as well. Go to the Facebook photo album for a quick tour of the park.  By the way, to view Palmetto Bay's photos on Facebook you don't have to be a member but it is a quick load way of viewing  pictures instead of on our website.  Just trying to make it easier to see our photos especially for those of you on dial-up.  http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=181866&id=80499470744

Campaign Signs I sympathize with the residents who have contacted me about the length of the campaign season and the yard signs. There are no rules as of yet on when campaigns or signs can start.   However, it is all part of the democratic process that is so important to all of us.  The process is what allowed us to elect to incorporate.  Signs are a way of showing support.   There has been talk about missing and misplaced signs.  I expect that most of the sign loss is from kids fooling around (please discourage this) or yard services.  I am attaching the Palmetto Bay Election Official's information letter on campaigns. It details the legal issues involved in removing,  otherwise damaging the signs or moving their locations.  I know that everyone understands that the signs are just part of the election process that must be respected.  http://palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/Village%20Departments/Clerk/SIGNS-long-2.pdf

There has been much talk and conversation about the oil spill and what the impacts will be on Florida and the South Dade area.  I am providing two links to keep the information flowing.  Miami Dade County Mayor Alvarez's Office provides these updates.  http://palmettobay-fl.gov/pdfs/County-State%20Departments/Mayors%20Office/Deepwater%20Horizon%20Oil%20Spill.pdf
The Public Service Commission provides this link to its update newsletter on this and other issues such as the FPL lines site plans.  http://www.floridapsc.com/.

Safe Route to Schools,  Feb. 2010 --  The Village is receiving County grant money to survey safer routes to schools for our kids – a program that is close to my heart as a long-time advocate for schools and safer streets in our community. This study is part of a national program that encourages kids to walk and bicycle to school. The areas around and leading up the Village's four public schools will benefit. This is also good green news, as it encourages kids to reduce their carbon footprint on our community, and it's great news for the health of our kids, too. In fact, I was quoted recently in The Miami Herald saying just that!

Village Map May Spark Growth, Feb. 2010 -- I have been a strong advocate of economic growth in the Village's commerical areas. There is a recent effort underway that will kick start interest and growth of new and existing businesses in our community – the new Village of Palmetto Bay map. The premier edition of this new marketing tool is presently in production, as advertisers are now lining up for the 30 display-ad slots available. More than 75,000 maps will be produced annually. Visit the Village website and/or Miami Maps for more information.

MIAMI HERALD, Feb. 21, 2010 -- Councilwoman Stanczyk is quoted in Neighbors section supporting a study to find the safest routes to schools.

PALMETTO BAY NEWS / MIAMI HERALD, Jan. 2010  -- The Herald (part 1) and Palmetto Bay News (part 2) recently featured a series I wrote outlining commercial developments taking place across the Village. Click the links above to read more...

COUNCIL UPDATE, Jan. 13, 2010 -- I hope the New Year has started out in a positive direction for everyone. I love the feel of a clean slate and starting fresh in January of each year. New goals to accomplish and directions to take make the New Year an exciting time for me. True, some of the resolutions may get held over from the past year but there is new hope to be able to check the box, completed. The Palmetto Bay website has a quick glance view in pictures of the past year in our Village. Take a look and then tour the rest of the website. It keeps changing and continues to offer more and more to our residents.

More "Updates" will be added as this page is further developed.
